Know Thy Linen

Linen is made from the flax plant by spinning the fibers from the stem of the plant. It comes in a wide range of natural colors such as white, grey, tan, ecru. It is a magical material which keeps you warm during cold and cool in sun. Given the laborious and time consuming process it takes to produce linen yarn, it is often designated as a high price commodity and a ‘luxury’ fabric.

Linen has a wide range of properties and while carrying the risk of pontificating, let me call out a few for you. It is one of the most biodegradable materials (when untreated) and carries superb strength, more so when wet. It has excellent moth repellent properties and it is not surprising that a byproduct of flax, linseed oil, is used for wood preservation.

Linen and cotton are so different – linen being a “stem”, designed to move water, taking it in and letting it go, while cotton, being a seed, is designed to take and take.

A fun fact - American Dollar bills have 25% linen!

Linen is arguably the oldest known fabric to mankind and its durability made it the common choice for textile material during ancient Egypt. Quite soberly dressed in plain white linen fabrics, dazzling jewellery used to offer a  sublime contrast. Another fun fact - not only the fabric was used as a currency in ancient times, it was an integral part of the mummifying process!

Linen offers a great deal of versatility to designers who can work with this material to create products across curtains, bedsheets, scarfs, tea towels, caps, shirts & kurtas, bags - to name a few.
